The challenge

The lowlands grow wheat and sunflower on heavy chernozem that has been losing organic carbon for forty years. Growers knew the numbers were going the wrong way; nobody had a baseline they trusted, and the last two carbon programmes in the region paid late or not at all.

Enrolment started with a hard condition from the co-op: no payment delays, and every number traceable to a sample or a satellite pass they could see themselves.

We had been burned twice. The difference this time was that the baseline was ours, locked with the registry before anyone talked about money.

What we did

Stratified sampling in week three: 1,040 cores across 180 farms, split by soil type and slope. Cover crops drilled into stubble the same autumn, with a quarterly 0.3 m satellite pass scoring cover and residue against each farm plan.

What the numbers said

Season one stored 3.2 tonnes of CO2e per hectare on average. Two fields on the sandier northern edge showed no change; they are now on a different practice plan and excluded from issuance until the next sampling round. The audit pack lists both.

  • 42,000 tCO2e issued through Verra VCS in month 14
  • Payout to 180 growers within 30 days, in forints
  • Error bars published per field in the 2025 Impact Report
