The challenge
Dry summers, stony soils and estates that had cleared the inter-row for fifty years to save water.
What we did
Drought-tolerant mixes drilled between rows after harvest, terminated before the vines wake, with every pass scored for cover through the winter.
We thought cover would cost us water. The passes showed the soil held more of it.
What the numbers said
1.9 tonnes per hectare in year one. Two estates on the sandiest soils showed no change and moved to a mulch plan.
- 14 estates, 2,100 hectares enrolled
- Puro.earth accepted the sampling plan in January 2026
- Issuance expected after the second sampling round
